Imagine a ceramic map of India hanging on the wall. Suddenly it falls and shatters. Which gives a truer picture, the whole map divided neatly into states, or the shattered map scattered across the floor? In the biblical sense, the shattered map is more accurate: the country of India has some 3,000 tribes, castes and dialects (as estimated by the Institute of Hindu Studies) all quite separated from each other like pieces of a shattered map. Contemporaries of Columbus were convinced that the world was flat like a pancake. Of course, his historic voyage of 1492 disproved this idea. But—it has taken over 450 years for those focused on missions to abandon the pancake theory!! “What!” you say, “How could this be?” Here, let me explain:
Suppose the dam breaks twenty miles up the valley from your small hometown of ten thousand people. A wall of water fifty feet high is surging down the canyon. You have just thirty minutes to warn as many people as possible to scramble up the valley slope out of danger. But evacuating ten thousand people in thirty minutes is not going to be easy. On 1 July, 2007, just after midnight, 1,850,401,827 people will be unevangelized. Beyond the number, consider that these are not people who have some vague perception of Jesus from Sunday School days, nor people with a token Bible on the shelf, nor people who can flick over worship services on television, nor people who work with Christians and avoid them. These are souls completely removed from any form of Christian witness.
